VW is bringing an even smaller member of the TSI family to the Jetta and Golf lineup, and ditching the wheezy 115hp 8-valve 2 liter.

8V as in eight Valves? Wow...

Beware of timing chain issues! VW is aware of the issue but they are very reluctant to fork over money for out of warranty cars. The tensioners are too weak, the chains tend to rattle and occasionally jump a tooth or two... You know what happens next.

Apparently, this doesn’t happen on the 1.2 but the 1.4 is famous for that.

They’ve had the 1.4TSi in VWs, Seats, Skodas for years (our Skoda Superb estate is), though they are now making more of them 1.4TSi ACT (active cylinder technology) 4 cylinder engines which shutdown 2 cylinders around town and when under lowload and seamlessly kick in the other two when needed.

I had no idea VW was still selling the 2.slow. It was obsolete 10+ years ago.

I’m fairly certain the UK market hasn’t had that engine since the mk4.

I thought the mkiv already had the 1.6 fsi. Or was that optional?

I had no idea they were still putting those in any current cars. This has to be the most bulletproof engine you can buy in a new German car (although mostly for the same reasons I wouldn’t want it). I’ll take the natural aspiration and forged internals, but could do without low compression 2V head and iron block.

It still would make the perfect basic car engine for those characteristics minus poor fuel economy, although ability to run crap 87 high-sulfur E10 without issue is a question mark for even a 1.4T built for the US. Let’s see how those things do with the ridiculous 15k service intervals in addition to carbon buildup and boost. Now there was something about my lawn...

Yes, I know, but it is the first standalone application for the U.S. market (I never said it was a “new” engine.)

I just bought a new TDI so I’m not in the market for a VW.

Good move and about damn time. Interesting that the Golf will get it as a new base engine as well. I’m happy to have the 1.8TSI but would’ve probably been happy with the 1.4 as well since it produces the same torque (which is probably electronically limited on the bigger engine as the clutch is apparently not up to handling much more). I wonder if they’ll switch the manual transmission for a 6-speed as is included with that 1.4TSI in the rest of the world. That would be nice as the 5-speed I’ve got is a fairly outdated unit.

As long as you don’t buy used you’re fine. I’m pretty sure the issue has been fixed.

Yeah, it’s only being sold in a Jetta S...totally stripped out model that usually sells for $13-14k new.

Yep, the last version of the ancient EA287. The first 1.2 liter model was introduced in 1972.

I think the engine was only appealing when equipped with Neuspeed’s now-discontinued supercharger kit...the one with the blower integrated into an intake manifold. Otherwise it’s just too gutless.

The 5-speed is one of the reasons I didn’t even bother test driving the 1.8TSI version of the Sportwagen and just went straight to the TDI.

The 1.4TSi ACT is rumoured to get 70mpgUK in the Skoda Superb estate (similar, VW Passat/Audi A6 avant) which at 1,500Kg is good going.

I wanted a manual, a gas engine (don’t drive nearly enough to justify the TDI) and didn’t want to splurge for a GTI so I had to choose the 5-speed. The gearing in this gearbox is really tall (for economy obviously) and while the 1.8 has the torque to deal with that, 6 closer ratios would make it much more fun. Doubly so if they spaced the gears evenly, as it is you have to shift at differing rpms depending on the gear to avoid the power output falling flat on its face. You get used to it but it can still be infuriating at times.

I’m gonna be kinda pissed if they put a 6 speed on the 1.8 now that I think about it.

Yeah, if i drove that much the TDI wouldve been no question. It took me almost a month to put the first 1000km on the car. I’m now at almost 16000km in 9.5 months, which was helped by 1300km to Montreal and back for the Grand Prix. Hooray for no commute though.
